Adult ADHD – sample from a specialized outpatient clinic

Abstract

The examination of 40 patients with adult ADHD and comparison of the data with other studies on this topic show that the Freiburg sample fits in many respects with the picture that has emerged from findings in recent years. This includes the distribution of subtype frequencies: the combined subtype is most common, followed by the inattentive subtype (divided into purely inattentive and inattentive with a historical combined subtype) and the hyperactive-impulsive subtype. Another aspect of this study is the severity classification of the core symptoms of ADHD (inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity) and impairment due to ADHD. This allows associations with demographic data and psychiatric comorbidities to be demonstrated. The components hyperactivity and hyperactivity-impulsivity proved relevant to comorbid substance abuse/dependence and to treatments received (outpatient, inpatient). The inattention factor plays a role in the type and duration of outpatient treatment and vocational training.
