Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults

Abstract

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is currently the subject of intensive discussion in German psychiatry. ADHD begins in childhood and, with a prevalence of 3–5%, is among the most common child and adolescent psychiatric disorders; in up to 50% of affected individuals it persists into adulthood. Thus, the disorder, which is associated with a high risk of psychiatric comorbidity, is also of much greater importance in psychiatric care than previously assumed. This review summarizes current findings on the epidemiology, etiology, clinical symptoms and comorbidity, diagnosis, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy of adult ADHD.
