Evidence-based treatment of children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Abstract

The article provides an overview of the state of empirical research on the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It begins by highlighting the importance of evidence-based treatment. The results of the most important international treatment study in this field, the US Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD (MTA Study), are then summarized. Finally, evidence-based conclusions on the effectiveness of various psychological and pharmacological interventions are summarized on the basis of meta-analyses, reviews, and individual empirical studies.
