Abstract

ADHD is a serious risk factor for co-occurring psychiatric disorders and negative psychosocial consequences in adulthood. Previous trials on psychotherapeutic concepts for adult ADHD were based on behavioral (cognitive behavioral and dialectical-behavioral) psychotherapeutic approaches and showed significant effects. Targets of psychotherapeutic interventions are coping with the core symptoms, associated problems, comorbidities, but also probable consequences like low self-esteem and interpersonal problems. Improvements of ADHD symptomatology and associated symptoms (eg, depression, anxiety) have been reported after psychotherapeutic treatment. There is preliminary evidence for a significantly greater benefit from a combination of medication and psychotherapy. The group setting per se and support by other participants are regarded as strongly helpful.

This manuscript provides an overview of the treatment approaches and of selected empirical studies on the effectiveness of psychotherapy in adults with ADHD. Following this, a validated and manualized treatment concept will be described as an exemplary approach. Finally, the specific requirements of psychotherapy for ADHD in adults and of further research will be discussed.
