Recent developments in the diagnosis of mental disorders in adolescence

Abstract

The present work introduces the clinical interview methods most commonly used for diagnosis in adolescents as well as appropriate instruments for various specific disorders in German-speaking countries. Additionally, special characteristics in the diagnosis of mental disorders in adolescents are explained and practical advice for clinical practice is given. Raters are confronted with a multitude of problems that make a valid diagnosis difficult. The distinction between pathological and youth-typical behavior, the high comorbidity of mental disorders in adolescence, and the inadequate transferability of diagnostic criteria are examples here. Furthermore, including different sources of information, a thorough exploration of the psychosocial circumstances of the adolescents, and keeping abreast of newly developing disorders are needed.
