Psychotherapy of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Adults

Abstract

Although stimulant medication is the basis of treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) in adults, different psychosocial interventions can be used in combination with medication to assist in the lifetime management of the disorder. A multimodal treatment program should include medication as well as psychotherapy. This article gives an overview regarding the variety of psychosocial treatments in ADHD and current status of the effectivity of the interventions. The results of the studies suggest that psychosocial interventions used generally in conjunction with medications appear useful for adults with ADHD. Because of methodological limitations of most of the studies the data further suggest the need for additional controlled investigations.
