Behavior problems in children with isolated and combined learning deficiencies

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to investigate and characterize the correlation between learning deficiencies and behavior problems. Out of a sample of N = 929 second graders, a target sample of N = 94 children with isolated literacy problems (LP), isolated calculation problems (CP), combined problems (COM), or no learning problems (CG) were identified. These children were tested periodically between second and fourth grade. Behavior problems were measured by parent judgment (CBCL). Children with learning deficiencies showed more behavior problems than the CG. No differences in the types of behavior problems were found between the LP and CP groups. Results indicated that children withCOMand those with constant learning deficiencies showed more behavior problems. It can be concluded that it is already important in primary school to consider combined learning deficiencies and to adopt a comprehensive diagnosis, including behavior problems in children with learning deficiencies.
