Multimodal treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adulthood

Abstract

The indication for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adulthood (adult ADHD) is determined not by the diagnosis alone, but by symptom severity, comorbid disorders, poor psychosocial adaptation, and limited resources. Psychoeducation, providing knowledge about symptoms, disorder models, and treatment options, forms the basis of therapy. A combination of psychopharmacotherapy and psychotherapy is recommended. Various psychotherapeutic interventions that make use of existing resources show positive effects. Psychosocial counseling and self-help groups complement the treatment concept.
